"Working with issues in pedagogy and linguistic agency through this third-space research we do as artists, I’ve been thinking about language baggage: how the functioning of language displaced (from its country of origin) acquires baggage; how that displacement generates friction; how friction is conductive and productive. I've been developing experimental/calculated/playful strategies to contend with the relationship of poetics, politicism, and language; learning that it's not a Venn diagram but a stretchy something."
Ejercicios para aprender español are performative relational encounters in which the exhibition space is transformed into an active classroom. Visitors are invited to partake in language lessons centered around writing poetry in Spanish, and navigating the associative signifiers that inevitably come up. At the end of each cycle, a short lecture is presented in Spanish along with a reading of the poems created during that cycle; concluding with a sound piece produced using the tonal language of Chinanteco chiflado mixed with found & produced recordings of birds and whistling.
The title of this work mimics the naming devices associated with language lessons/workbooks. Various materials that cull from an aesthetic of pedagogy were produced including posters, notebooks, and flyers. Additionally, a video piece was made by collaborating with New York based Dominican artist, Gina Goico; the work can be described as the Electric Company meets Mexican noticiero(TV news) on lsd.
