Dmitri Zurita
Mexican - American
b. 1987, on the Border

Working within the intersection of photography, socially engaged art, and conceptual practice.

I stand between two countries, crossing back and forth amongst nations —existing somewhere in-between. Prying open the gap between evidence and truth, image and reality, one perspective or context and another; my work offers viewers a set of questions that require them to peel back, decode, or perceive another reality, another way of seeing. I deliberate each action thoroughly, allowing room for chance and ambiguity, understanding my process as gesture and performance, as a form of processing and responding to contemporaneity. Personal interests include: quantum mechanics, astrophysics, contemporary philosophy, philosophy of language, art theory, political sociology, cultural anthropology, soviet futurism, economics, stare meditation, and homemade pizza.

Dmitri can often be found telling jokes on wednesday nights at a rotating art-bar he helped create in Santa Cruz, CA.
